Channelling usually starts before you tamp. Grounds clump and settle unevenly in the basket, and water routes through the soft spots. A WDT tool breaks up those clumps first, so the puck sits at an even density before you press it.
Five fine needles, set into a brass collar on a turned wood handle, stir through the grounds to redistribute them. The handle stores inside a matching wood case with a brass socket, a simple push-fit that keeps the needles covered between shots.
Grounds cling to the needles on any WDT tool as you lift out. A drop of water on the beans before grinding reduces the static.
