Grounds clump on the way out of the grinder, even from a good one. Tamp over that unevenness and it's locked in: water finds the loose pockets first and channels straight through them while denser spots barely see any flow.

A WDT tool breaks the clumps up before you press. Run needles through the dose and the density evens out instead of sitting in patches. We stock a 5-needle and an 8-needle stirrer, a rotary needle head, and a 3-slope leveler for finishing the surface flat. None need a specific portafilter size. Most people run one alongside a puck screen: WDT fixes the grounds before you tamp, the screen manages the water on top of the finished puck.
