Which Portafilter Size Does Your Machine Use? Breville, Sunbeam & De'Longhi Lookup
Order the wrong puck screen and it won't sit flush against your basket. Order the wrong tamper and it either rattles around the rim or doesn't go in at all. None of this is really about brand loyalty. It comes down to one number: the portafilter size your machine actually runs.
Three sizes dominate the Australian home espresso market: 51mm, 54mm and 58mm. Almost nobody prints that number on the machine itself, so most buyers find out the size is wrong after the accessory arrives. This is the lookup that should stop that happening.
Why the number matters more than the brand name
A lot of buyers assume "Breville" or "De'Longhi" is enough information to order the right gear. It isn't. Breville alone spans two different basket sizes depending on the model, and De'Longhi's range isn't one size either. The brand tells you who made the machine. The portafilter size tells you what will actually fit.
The confusion isn't really anyone's fault. Portafilter size is a nominal measurement, which means the number on a spec sheet is a rounded label, not the exact reading you'd get with callipers. A "58mm" basket usually measures closer to 58.3 to 58.5mm at the inside rim. That's worth knowing before you buy: it's why puck screens are sold in a spread of diameters rather than one flat number. A screen cut to the label size, not the real one, sits loose.
The two-minute check: measure your basket
If you want certainty instead of a best guess, measure it. It takes about two minutes and needs nothing you don't already own.
What you need
- Your portafilter, with the basket still in it
- A ruler or tape measure (a phone case with a ruler printed on the back works fine)
How to do it
- Pop the basket out of the portafilter. On almost every home machine it lifts straight out or unclips with light pressure, no tools required.
- Measure straight across the inside rim, edge to edge, not the outside of the metal wall.
- Round to the nearest of the three common sizes: 51mm, 53 to 54mm, or 58mm.
One more thing worth knowing before you order: some Grao accessories are sized in 51, 54 and 58mm, others in 51, 53 and 58mm. That isn't an inconsistency between products. Manufacturers round the same Breville-class basket differently depending on where they take the measurement, so 53mm and 54mm are naming the same fit. If you've measured yours at 53mm, both a "54mm" tamper and a "53mm" dosing ring are correct for you.
The general pattern, by brand
Measuring is the only way to be certain, particularly on a secondhand machine where a basket may have been swapped at some point by a previous owner. But if you want a fast first guess before you check, this is the pattern that holds across most of the Australian market.

Two things can throw this pattern off. Model years change specs without warning, and a secondhand machine might be running a basket that was swapped in by whoever owned it before you. Treat the table as a starting guess, not a final answer.
What actually goes wrong if you buy the wrong size
A puck screen cut too small won't sit flush against the basket wall. It rocks slightly under pressure, and it lets water pass around the gap instead of through the mesh, which defeats the reason you bought one.
A tamper that's too small for the basket rattles against the wall and tilts the puck before you've even started the shot. Too large, and it won't seat at all. Either way, you get uneven pressure across the puck before the pour has even begun.
A dosing ring or funnel relies on sitting flush against the rim to keep grounds inside the basket. Get the size wrong and it either won't seat, or it seats with a gap, and the grounds you were trying to keep off the bench end up there anyway.
None of this is dramatic. It's just gear that technically doesn't do its job, which is worse in a way, because it looks fine sitting in the drawer.
Once you know your size
Buy for the number, not the machine name.
51mm (most De'Longhi compact pump machines)

Quick answers

What if my basket measures somewhere between two sizes? Round to the nearest of the three. A reading of 53 to 54mm is the same practical fit either way, for the reasons above.
Can I use a 58mm tamper in a 54mm basket, or the other way around? No. The tamper has to match the basket it's tamping, not the machine's price point or reputation. A mismatched tamper either won't seat properly or won't fit at all.
