What Is Channelling? Symptoms, Causes and the Tool for Each

Channelling produces a split, not a uniform miss. If the whole shot tastes evenly sour, that's more often stale beans or too coarse a grind. The Causes, and Which One Is Actually Yours
Channelling has one mechanism (uneven resistance through the puck) but several possible causes, and most explanations treat it as a single problem with a single fix. It isn't. Here's what actually creates that unevenness, roughly ordered by how often each one turns out to be the real culprit.
1. Uneven dose distribution
Grounds don't fall into a basket in one even layer. Static clings fine particles together, larger clumps come off the burrs without breaking apart, and the result sits in the basket as patches: some denser, some looser, more or less at random depending on your grinder's geometry. Tamp over that and the unevenness is locked in before the shot even starts.

3. A basket that doesn't match, or doesn't sit flat
Run the wrong basket for your portafilter's actual size, or a basket that's slightly worn or warped, and you've built a low-resistance path into the hardware itself. No amount of distribution work fixes a physically uneven basket floor.

Stale beans produce a flat, muted shot that no distribution tool can revive. A grind set too coarse or too fine changes how fast water moves through the coffee, and no amount of even distribution changes particle size.
